The human body is made of multiple interconnected structures that develop, grow and communicate with one another continuously through life. In the craniofacial region, the TMJ and the airway demonstrate this interconnectedness and can be appreciated clinically as well as radiographically. The aim of this class is to show the relationship of the TMJ and the airway through radiographic imaging and to show the function/ dysfunction of one can affect the other, and that sometimes the TMJs are affected first leading to the airway issues and sometimes it is the airway obstruction that starts the cascade of events that leads to the TMJ dysfunction.

  • Learning the TMJ’s normal radiographic appearance and in the internal derangement/ degenerative joint disease continuum.
  • Understanding the role of the TMJ in the growth and development of the face and the upper respiratory tract.
  • Showing the relationship between the TMJ, airway and occlusion radiographically and how dysfunction in one affects the other.
